- My name is Christine Wanless and I am a University of Nebraska nursing student working with Joan Creager, the school nurse, this semester. As you have probably heard the obesity rate in this country is sky rocketing. It is alarming that children are included in the rising obesity rate. There are many ways to prevent obesity in children, but in this letter I would like to present a couple of ways.
- The first has to do with the most important meal of the day, breakfast. Research has shown that breakfast is key in weight loss as well as maintaining a healthy weight. Other benefits of breakfast are an increase in academic performance. It also helps with energy levels. Our bodies are like a car and need to be filled up in order to go at their best potential. I know that a common problem is having time for breakfast and I have included some quick breakfast ideas. The school also offers free breakfast for those who qualify.
- Another way to help avoid obesity in your family is choosing healthy snack options. On the sheet enclosed are healthy snack chooces that are easy to find at the local grocery stores.
