Helping Middle School Students Find Motivation and Purpose

Culler Families!

Middle school is a pivotal time for students as they start to think about their future, develop new interests, and explore who they are. Research shows that middle schoolers thrive when they connect what they’re learning in school to their personal goals and future aspirations. By encouraging them to think big and consider their own “future self,” you can help foster a sense of purpose that will support them academically and personally. As the weather gets chillier, and we all feel the second quarter lull in motivation, try some of these strategies to help cultivate a more meaningful and lasting sense of motivation in your student:

  1. Ask about Their Dreams: Ask open-ended questions like, “What kind of impact would you like to have in the world?” or “What are some big goals you have?” to spark their imagination.
  2. Connect Learning to Life: Help them see how school subjects can apply to real life by discussing how different topics are useful in various careers or community roles. Whether they’re learning about science, history, or math, connecting lessons to real-world applications can make the material feel more meaningful.
  3. Encourage Goal Setting: Support your child in setting small, achievable goals tied to their interests. Whether it’s in sports, arts, or academics, achieving goals can build confidence and a sense of purpose.
  4. Support Reflection and Exploration: Encourage your child to keep a journal, sketch, or create a vision board to explore who they want to be. Reflecting on these ideas can help them form a stronger sense of self and make every day learning more meaningful.

By nurturing these connections, you’re helping your child see how their current efforts contribute to a bigger picture—building a foundation for a brighter and more motivated future.

AVID (Achievement Via Individual Determination) is an educational program that is designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college and beyond. This segment is meant for all Culler students and their families, not just those in the AVID Elective, so that every student can reap the benefits of successful habits and routines now, and in the future!

For more information, visit https://home.lps.org/curriculum/avid/ or reach out to our AVID Elective Instructor, Mx. Beatty via email (abeatty3@lps.org)

Digital Citizenship Tips

Would you like to have a conversation with your student about staying safe online?

Here are some questions to start the conversation:

  • What are the terms of service and age limits for the apps you are using?
  • What should you do when you see or receive a message, image or post that makes you feel uncomfortable?
  • How can you protect your online reputation?

Want ideas for supporting digital citizenship in your home? Follow your school, LPS Library Services, or #lpsdigcit on social media to get weekly tips. Or find the whole collection here: https://home.lps.org/libraries/digital-citizenship/

Career Development Month

November is National Career Development Month. Below is a link to a short video to help you navigate your child’s journey to college. It also touches on the different pathways your child can take after high school such as apprenticeships, trade school, community college, and the military.

Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month – a time to honor a culture rich in resiliency, strength, and survivance. As November quickly approaches, let’s reflect on the importance of this month, celebrating Native culture, creativity, and continued perseverance. Additionally, the next time you visit Culler Middle School, please take a moment to read Culler Middle School’s Land Acknowledgement located in the red brick hallway – a daily, physical, recognition that Indigenous Peoples are the original stewards of the lands on which we now live, and whose legacy and history will not be forgotten.

Technology for Learning

Screen Time

Did you know not all screen time is the same? There is a significant difference between “active” screen time (engaging in focused production of content) and “passive” screen time (consuming entertainment media). The American Academy Of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends families have thoughtful conversations around the purposes for using digital media and offers an online tool for creating a “personalized family media use plan.” AAP Media Plan.

Messaging Your Student's Teachers

Parents/Guardians can easily send messages to their student’s teachers from right within ParentVUE. Clicking on the small “envelope” button next to a teacher’s (or other staff member’s) name anywhere within the platform (e.g., Current Schedule, School Information, Grade Book, etc.) will begin a draft message within Messages/Synergy Mail.

More information about messaging your student’s teachers can be found on the LPS ParentVUE Quick Guide.

Health Office

Yearly School Health Screening for Students

We continue to send out referrals for any student that has not passed the screenings this Fall.  Please call if you have any questions.  Take the letters to your Dr and have them filled out and then return them to the Health Office for the students chart.

We are also continuing to track Immunization compliance so please, please bring us the immunization records after being seen so we can get our students compliant.
