October 2024

Letter from our Principal

Greetings Families,

Hard to believe October is half way gone! Our community has a lot to celebrate this month. Our monthly celebrations on the first Friday of the month acknowledge over 10 students from each grade level that embody our school values: Courageous, One Community, Unstoppable, Giving It Our All, Authentic, Ready To Learn, and Successful. Daily, your scholars have the opportunity to earn paw points based on these same values. If you have not yet, check out all the positive praise your student earns daily on Parent Vue!

AVID For All

Helping Middle School Students Achieve Their Goals

As your child navigates the exciting, yet challenging, middle school years, it is important that we work together to support their academic and personal growth. One crucial skill for success is the ability to set and achieve meaningful goals.

The skill of “goal-directed persistence” is one of the last executive function abilities to fully develop in adolescents. This means that until this goal-setting ability matures, students may struggle to stay focused on long-term objectives, often getting pulled towards more immediate interests and rewards.

As teachers, we are committed to helping your child practice this important skill in the classroom. Some strategies we are using include:

  • Asking students to set small, achievable learning goals, like “I will finish my math worksheet with no more than 2 mistakes.”
  • Modeling goal-setting ourselves and having students observe when we meet our own goals.
  • Praising students when they work hard, even if they don’t fully succeed yet.
  • Leading class discussions about overcoming obstacles and setting realistic goals.
  • Setting common class goals, like an 85% homework completion rate, and brainstorming ways to support that.
  • Building personal connections with students before discussing their individual goals and challenges.

At home, you can also support your child’s goal-setting skills by:

  • Helping them set relevant goals around their interests, like saving money to buy a desired toy or activity.
  • Using quick, frequent rewards to teach task persistence.
  • Assigning chores and breaking them into small, manageable steps.
  • Collaborating with your child on goals that are meaningful and achievable for them, rather than imposing your own.

By working together, we can empower our scholars to develop the critical executive function skills needed to succeed not only in middle school, but throughout their academic and personal journey.

How Can AVID Help Your Student?

  1. Study Skills and Organization: Students learn strategies to stay organized, take practical notes, and manage their time, helping them stay on top of schoolwork.
  2. Collaboration and Critical Thinking: Through group work and discussions, students develop teamwork and problem-solving skills that will serve them in all areas of life.
  3. College and Career Preparation: AVID helps students explore future options by introducing college and career pathways while building the academic skills they’ll need to succeed.
  4. Increased Confidence: With AVID’s focus on goal-setting and self-determination, students gain the confidence to take on challenges and achieve their personal best.

How to Join AVID

After fall break, seventh and eighth graders may apply for the AVID Elective to join the class for the spring semester. We encourage students who are motivated and ready to build strong academic habits to apply! Most sixth graders will also get a chance to experience AVID through a shortened version of the course, which will be offered for one quarter during this school year. This introduction will help prepare them for future academic success. Applications for next year will be available just before spring break.

We’re proud to offer AVID at Culler Middle School, where together, we can help students unlock their full potential!

AVID (Achievement Via Individual Determination) is an educational program that is designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college and beyond. This segment is meant for all Culler students and their families, not just those in the AVID Elective, so that every student can reap the benefits of successful habits and routines now, and in the future!

For more information, visit https://home.lps.org/curriculum/avid/ or reach out to our AVID Elective Instructor, Mx. Beatty via email (abeatty3@lps.org)

Hello Cougar Families!

Happy October and the start of Fall! Weather wise that is!

Volleyball, Soccer and Cross Country are wrapping up their seasons! All 3 sports did an amazing job! Please congratulate your son or daughter on a great Fall sports season!

Our next athletic season for 7th/8th graders is GIRLS BASKETBALL! WE WILL START ON OCTOBER 9TH (Wed) with a meeting after school in the East gym. If you can’t make this date, no worries, you can still join after. Please encourage your daughter to go out for basketball! If they played volleyball, we like to see them continue on with basketball. There are several benefits of being involved and us coaches would like to provide that opportunity to them. ALL SKILLS are needed! We can have up to 3 teams if needed. Thanks for you assistance in building up our numbers! If you have any questions regarding girls basketball, please reach out and I’ll be more than happy to help you.

Digital Citizenship Tips

Our students are learning about online communication and etiquette. Here are some prompts to help you continue the conversation at home:

  • What do you like to do online? What are some positive ways you use technology?
  • How do you use good manners online?
  • What is the difference between face-to-face and online conversations? When would it be better to talk to someone in person rather than texting or posting something online?
  • Why should you ask permission before posting a photo or video of someone else online?
  • How do you avoid other online distractions (games, browsing other websites, etc.) while doing schoolwork online?

Culler Counseling

The mission of Culler Middle School’s counseling program is to advocate for ALL students which is demonstrated through forming positive connections and cultivating a sense of community. As professional school counselors, we will provide a comprehensive, data driven, developmentally-appropriate program that supports each student’s academic, prosocial, and career development.

Bullying Prevention Month

October is bully prevention awareness month. To reinforce the importance of bully prevention, the LPS Strategic Plan supports student and staff wellbeing and outcomes as priority areas. Our LPS Anti-Bullying Policy commits to providing physically safe and emotionally secure environments for all students and staff. To support this policy, bully prevention is taught through a variety of content areas and opportunities. In addition, all LPS middle and high schools have a Hope Squad. Hope Squad members are respectful and empathetic UPSTANDERS who aim to connect their peers to a trusted adult who can help. Our continued focus is to increase awareness of bully prevention and provide opportunities for students to apply self awareness, social awareness and responsible decision making skills. We are #strongertogether as we stand against bullying.

Thank you for your continued support with bully prevention efforts in Lincoln Public Schools. Below are resources for families about bully prevention.

Culler Middle School's Native Land Acknowledgement

October 14th is Indigenous Peoples’ Day – a time to honor a culture rich in resiliency, strength, and survivance. As we go into this long weekend, let’s reflect on the importance of this day, celebrating Native culture, creativity, and continued perseverance. This week, we were able to hang up Culler Middle School’s Land Acknowledgement – a daily, physical, recognition that Indigenous Peoples are the original stewards of the lands on which we now live, and whose legacy and history will not be forgotten.

Technology for Learning

Eduroam

The eduroam wireless network is more secure than most public wifi networks and is available in several locations around Lincoln. Students using their LPS Chromebooks around town should connect to eduroam whenever it is available. Simply select it from the list of available networks – no other steps needed! Visit this poster and/or LPS jump code pao4 for more information.

Scenarios where Eduroam may come in handy include:

  • Visiting UNL campuses? Don’t hassle with UNL guest wifi, use Eduroam!
  • Hanging out at The Lighthouse, The Malone Center or The Bay? Use Eduroam!
  • Serving or staying at People’s City Mission? Use Eduroam!

Instructional Technology Tools (ITTs) in LPS & The LPS Portal

LPS believes that effective instruction can and should include the appropriate use of instructional technology to support learning. To that end, a District Instructional Technology Tool (ITT) Committee works to identify ITTs that are safe for student use, support district learning goals, and encourage innovative teaching and learning. All reviewed ITTs are cataloged in the LPS ITT Matrix [https://www.lps.org/apps/matrix/].

The most frequently used, approved, and supported ITTs are made available to students and staff in the LPS Portal [https://lps.org/go/YXGE]. Students access their LPS Portal by clicking the ‘HOME’ button on their Chromebook.

Need a conversation starter with your student? Ask them for a tour of their LPS Portal and which ITTs they’re currently using in class.

Health Office

Yearly School Health Screening for Students

We are doing the annual screenings for vision, hearing, dental and height and weight. Letters will be sent to parents if a student is having difficulty with any of these so they can be seen by a Dr (Eye, Dentist, Physician, ENT etc) due to findings. Please call the Health Office at any time if you have questions or concerns about anything sent to you. We will send any information from the health office in an envelope that is stamped in the lower left hand with “Return To Culler Health Office”. Our # is 402-436-1210, EXT #4.
